Antique Door Knobs - Unique Antique Collections

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

There are people who collect all sorts of thing. From dolls to bottle caps, there is a collection for nearly every personality. Some people even get all worked up over the old knobs on doors, and have started collections out of door knobs. We’re not sure how this collection happened. Maybe is started when an old door was going to be thrown out and there was a nostalgic moment, and the knob was kept as a memory. Then that knob called out for more knobs, and a collecting frenzy was underway.

No matter the reason for them, door knob collections are very popular, and can be very expensive. Some door knob collectors are very serious about their trade. They know all there is to know about door knobs. If you think a door knob is a door knob, you’re dead wrong.

In the last century door knobs have gone through a number of personality and design changes.
Instead of just being something used to open and close a door, door knobs back then were just as much a part of the house as the rest of the décor, and were expected to make a statement. For a while the job was relegated mostly to glass artists who created beautiful bubble glass knobs, lead crystal cut into jewel-like shapes, as well as amazing pieces of brass that were carved into extremely ornate patterns.

As time went on, styles of knobs came and went, and it was only in more modern times that the door knobs we used seemed to become a bit more boring, and just looked at as things that are meant to open a door.

It’s possible the boring state of today’s door knobs is what caused many hardware manufacturers to go back in time and start lines of pieces that are reproductions of those fascinating door knobs. Those reproductions have become a major income for those companies as people continually look for new ways to dress up their home.

But the real money seems to be in the door knobs that were really from that time. Just as much as the other collectibles and antiques in old estat00004000es can get a pretty penny at me like not the door knobs in those homes are also commanding top dollar at estate sales and auctions.

Here’s a little interesting door knob history:
During World War II, many people pulled the brass doorknobs from their homes to help the government in their collections of brass to make war goods. Having one of these brass goodies today can fetch a pretty penny at an auction.

How much would you pay for door knobs? How about $8,300 for just one knob? That’s the price that the ‘Doggie knob’ fetched at an auction. The beautifully carved bronze knob with a 1952 Topps baseball looking through the center was created in the late 1800s. There are believed to be only two of them in existence.

Good buys can be found at auctions and second hand markets but the authenticity of these watches are doubtful.

Maintenance of Watch

Maintenance of an watch is very difficult. The parts are not easily available and watches cannot be repaired at all watch shops. So do make sure that the seller also guarantees their repair if the need arises. Most watch sellers also provide maintenance and care manuals for the watch. Be sure to follow the instructions.

Cost of Watch

watches are available anywhere between $300 to millions of dollars depending upon the make, the date of manufacture, the history of the watch and the jewels in the watch. The market price of the watch is determined by its snob appeal and social acceptance.

watches make wonderful gifts and give the wearer a distinct and artistic look. watches combine artistic appeal and nostalgic charm. However, watches are costly in general and need a lot of maintenance and care.

Making Conscious Time Management Choices - The No in Yes

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Every time you say yes, you are also saying no. Every time you say no, you are also saying yes.

Many people find it challenging to say no… to their loved ones, to their boss, to their own many desires. If a request is made of them or a project shows up, they feel obligated to accept it, regardless of what else is on their plate.

Sometimes they greatly dislike this task or obligation that has shown up and they do not truly want to do it. At other times, they might want to do it very much, but know in their heart that they won’t be able to do so adequately and still meet all of their other obligations. Yet, instead of saying no, they agree to the new commitment… or avoid the issue and decline to refuse it, and end up doing it anyhow almost by accident.

Why do we say yes when no might be a better choice? Maybe we’re afraid of what will happen if we disagree with someone or don’t please them. Maybe we think we ought to be able to be that busy and still be together and happy. Maybe we have so many things we long to do that we don’t want to give anything up. Maybe saying no would have a likely consequence we simply aren’t willing to accept. Whatever the reason, we say yes instead of no, ignoring the sinking sense of doubt down in our bellies. , we’ll figure out a way to get it done anyhow… right?

Well, probably true, but the question is 1909 Philadelphia Caramel what cost? In reality, every time we say yes to something, we are saying no to something else. If you agree to that extra project at work when your plate is full without also creating a plan on how to get other stuff delegated or re-assigned, then you will either let other projects slide and say no to them, or you will work longer hours… and if you work longer hours, you will say no to things in your personal life, perhaps spending less time with your partner, your child, or your creative hobby. Perhaps you will say yes to helping a friend move at the expense of getting enough sleep, or say yes to staying on the phone with your mom for an extra hour at the cost of saying no to going to the gym and taking care of your body that day.

If on the other hand you say no to the new request… you are also saying yes to all of the commitments you have already, affirming them and their current importance to you. Sometimes a new opportunity is totally worth saying no to some of your other commitments, but often it is coming at a cost that you haven’t truly seen or noticed. So it comes down to this: are you choosing your priorities on purpose or by accident?

Believe me, I’m not saying this is an easy balance to strike, or that anyone can do it perfectly. I personally can attest to other lover this up many times, and I’m sure I’m not done screwing it up yet … though I believe I’m getting better. And there’s a world of grey here that I’m not getting into right now when these choices arise- for instance, you can sometimes say yes to a new request and consciously renegotiate other prior commitments in a way that still honors your values and others involved. Or you can say no to a large request but agree to do something smaller that you do have time for, and so on.

Anyway, the point is, next time you feel yourself wavering on the edge of accepting a task you don’t want, check in with yourself and be sure that you are okay not only with saying yes to this, but also no to that. Sometimes neither choice will be perfect, but it’s best for everyone if those choices are made consciously and in line with your deeper values and goals.

Swine Flu - Something Strange is Going On

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

Every year in the United States, on average, 36000 people die from getting the seasonal . In the United Kingdom, in 1959 Fleer Ted Williams normal year, 12000 people will die from the seasonal . World wide it has been estimated that between a half-million and one million people die as a result of having the seasonal .

Does the World Health Organisation declare a world-wide influenza pandemic at Lone Ranger 6 every year for the seasonal . No. They do not.

According to the WHO on June 11, 2009. In the United States there were 13217 cases of swine and 27 deaths. In the UK there were 822 cases and zero deaths. World-wide there were 28,744 confirmed cases of the swine influenza and 144 deaths.

In a statement to the press on June 11, 2009 the Director-General of the WHO, Dr Margaret Chan, said that after conferring with leading influenza experts, virologists, and public health officials and an Emergency Committee established for this purpose. It was decided to raise the level of the swine influenza pandemic alert from phase 5 to phase 6.

Over half a million people dying from seasonal influenza every year is not enough dead people for the WHO to issue a pandemic alert of level 6. When 144 people die from the swine virus this very small number of dead people IS sufficient for the WHO to proclaim a pandemic alert of level 6. This is strange.

With 12000 people every year dying from the seasonal the UK government usually buys up to fifteen million doses of seasonal vaccine. Three quarters of which go to the over 65s.

With a death rate of zero, on June 11, the UK Government has ordered a 120 million doses of the 2009 H1N1 vaccine. Enough vaccine for every person in the UK to have two shots. This is illogical.

The Benefits of Hip-Hop

Monday, October 26th, 2009

Almost two years ago, I was recovering from my third child. OK, I was huge for what I used to be. Before children, I was a slight size 12. I was at least three sizes bigger than I should have been and usually, I do lose the weight from a child but this one had more or less done in my waist line. If you’re reading this article and you’ve had kids, great but even if you haven’t had any, I’m still going to impress upon you this amazing exercise and what it could do for you.

For me, I felt heavy then. I looked heavy for me, although I wasn’t necessarily a pin-up for weight loss in other Captain America eyes. I didn’t have much energy and that of course could be blamed 1971-72 Topps basketball my child.

my daughter’s dance school instructor convinced me that adult hip-hip was a must for me. She’s a very hyper lady and had all this energy. I saved up.

After four weeks, I started to lose weight. The workout felt gentle and relaxed. I wasn’t bored but the main thing was the weight. I’m not talking about a nip here and a tuck here. I’m talking about real amounts of fat. If it takes over two thousand calories to lose a pound of fat, then in that once a week class for an hour, I must have been well into the thousands.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not a lie about at the best of times. I always walk. My favorite sports are swimming, basketball and walking.

But this class was amazing. After eight weeks, there went the love handles and so on and so on. Just that five month period once a week, I lost about twenty pounds that I never gained back. And that was one full ladies size.

It didn’t run in the September session but I started again in January.

After the first four weeks, I was really gaining muscle and losing fat. But now I’m three months into the same class more or less and I’ve already lost about thirty pounds. I have lost one complete ladies size so now I am closing in on the size 12 I used to be.

If they don’t run this in September, I’m hiring my own home tutor and inviting people to come. I don’t care. This is incredible.

Imagine the difference of two sizes in just two five month sessions of once a week for an hour? Ladies, this is completely unreal, sounds like a fairy tale but is totally the way I’m going to go. It doesn’t re00000CD7quire any alteration in eating or lifestyle choices, just a gentle to intense workout for an hour.

So if there is a dance studio near you offering adult hip-hop, by all means. Sign up. Don’t let the grass grow under your feet.

I pass this on to everybody out there. Try it.

More Guitar Heroes in the Making

Sunday, October 25th, 2009

For all the guitar-loving, wannabe rock stars out there who just never quite got around to learning how to play the actual instrument, a new invention may help bring those rock n’ roll dreams a little closer to reality. Well, at least slightly closer than standing in front Animals of the World the mirror playing air guitar to Motorhead all day.

Jada Toys, with a little help from the people behind the Guitar Hero video games, is Phantom the Guitar Hero Air Guitar Rocker. This patent-pending invention is expected to hit toy stores in March with a retail price of $29.99. The Air Guitar Rocker comes with four different components: a belt-buckle receiver, a small amplifier, an Air Cartridge and two magnetic picks. A person puts the buckle on his or her pants or belt, plugs it in to the amplifier, inserts the Air Cartridge and waves one of the magnetic picks in front of the buckle (in typical air guitar fashion). Based on the movement and location of the strumming, the amplifier produces a simulated guitar sound. A person learns to master the “instrument” by playing along with different songs. The buckle also can be connected to a home stereo for even louder ear-shredding solos.

As expected from a gadget designed for rock-n-roll dreamers, the Air Guitar Rocker features a number of distinctly “rock” touches. The belt buckle itself features a large shiny skull flanked by two flaming V-shaped guitars, while the amp can be cranked up to “11″ - a nice nod to the classic metal mockumentary “This is Spinal Tap”. But perhaps the most rockin’ aspect of the toy is the music itself. Contained on the Air Cartridge are 10 famous guitar riffs for people to play along with, including Black Sabbath’s “Iron Man,” Deep Purple’s “Smoke on the Water,” Motorhead’s “Ace of Spades,” Van Halen’s “You Really Got Me” and Boston’s “More Than a Feeling”. The cartridge also includes five original demo tracks that users can try to master. Eventually, Jada Toys plans on selling additional cartridges with more riffs from other famous tunes.

Oddly enough, the new Air Guitar invention comes from a company mostly known for producing die-cast toy cars - notably, collectibles modeled after vehicles in classic movies like The Godfather, Reservoir Dogs and Scarface, and the television series Speed Racer. But, with the tremendous success of the Guitar Hero series behind them, Jada is betting the Air Guitar Rocker will be a surefire hit. The Guitar Hero games are expected to sell around 7.5 million units this fiscal year and bring in $550 million in profit for Activision (the company behind the game). Much like the video game franchise, Jada Toys hopes their new gadget will find an audience with children and adults alike. They also hope their toy will succeed in doing what the Guitar Hero series has done so ingeniously - tap into the innate human desire for rock super stardom.

21. Why do a great percentage of persons fail in order?

order is a complex business. Every phase must be analyzed and tested. The right products must be selected, the correct type of ads placed in the proper media and 1,001 other details attended to constantly. The mailorder enthusiast is led to believe they can be an overnight success with very little work. When they find this is not the case they drop out before giving themselves a chance to learn the right methods.

22. What is the “Inner Circle” of order?

A Mailorder House is commonly defined as “An establishment conducting business by “. A Mailorder Dealer is simply one who sells by . The circle of order relates to the thousands of mailorder dealers operating throughout the country. The “Inner Circle of Order” refers to those successful professionals who have “climbed to the top” in the order field by long, hard work, study, knowledge and persistence.

23. How do you get in the “Inner Circle of Mailorder”?

As you learn and progress in the many and varied phases of mailorder business methods, you will set various goals. You must continuously change plans and programs to attain these goals. Unless you are one of those fortunate few who hit it “lucky” overnight with some special program, product, or gimmick, the best way to arrive at Ultimate success in mailorder is to “Dive” right into the “outer fringes of the Inner Circle” and start “climbing”. When your successes overtake and offset your failures, as you work your way up to the “Hub of the Wheel”, you will have finally reached the Ultimate height in Mailorder… The Inner Circle!

24. Where to Start in Mailorder?

The best way to start is to work with those who are already there. Obtain several small mailorder trade magazines. Get one page ad sheets and various circulars. You can spend a small amount on BIG MAILS and be flooded with magazines, adsheets, circulars, etc. with thousands of different offers and potential opportunities. For a dollar or two you can get listed in these various media as wanting offers and “be assured”, you will get your money’s worth!

25. What is one of the most valuable assets for the mailorder beginner?

“Junk “. As you receive information and various packets, analyze the offers and send for full information on the ones that appeal to you. File and keep all the information you receive by the kind of program or plan, and we don’t mean to put them in “File 13″. None of this “Junk ” is Junk; there is no such word in the vocabulary of order dealers. It is one of their most valuable assets, if properly analyzed, filed and used intelligently.

26. What must you do as your files accumulate, in order to succeed?

Don’t just send off for the many deals, then wait until you accumulate a room full of files. Time is money. You can handle only a small percent of the programs available, so right away00004000, jump in and “lightly” test several of the programs that interest you. Spend only a minimum on each plan or program, until your tests prove out, then hit the winners hard and fast!

27. Some great money-makers to include in your mailorder business?

Printing and publishing… publish your own mailorder books and manuals. Manufacture your own product in your garage or basement. Purchase your product direct from factories at distributors cost. Get involved in the sale of the thousands of How-To books and programs available. Make up unique How-to-reports, stories, etc., in cartoon form. Write valuable promotion deals for the millions of merchants and retailers… put it on tape. Sell or lease your name lists. Make up your own commission circular programs and adsheets. Offer big … others commission circulars with your own mailings. i.e. Do everything possible through the that is legal until you find the right programs to make your million.

28. How to stay ahead of the game?

You must constantly keep up with what other dealers are doing! Check out the successful programs and build your own around them. Give constant attention to your ideas. Write them down and act on the good ones. Find new products, develop “solid” plans around them and test them in the market place.

29. How to double your earnings in mailorder?

Begin by running one or two ads in several different mailorder publications. When orders begin coming in take a full 50% of the profits and invest them in more advertising. You must continue to expand your advertising in order to double your income.

30. What is another method to double your income?

Multiply the number of products or services. If you are offering the right products and advertise in the right media you can be greatly surprised by the results. Continuous investment of profits for advertising and new items that generate orders are the secret if you wish to succeed in any business and mailorder is certainly no exception.

31. How do you get set up as a Co-publisher?

You place your ad in a trade magazine or adsheet that is “Co-Publishable”. Send your ad and remittance to the Co-Publisher who will forward the same, along with 50% of your payment to the Prime Publisher. Your ad will appear in the next issue and the publisher will send you full details on becoming a Co-Publisher.

32. What are the usual benefits of Co-publishing?

As a Co-Publisher, you generally get your future ads placed at one-half the published rates; 50% on commission ads you obtain; 50% for subscriptions received; 50% on products advertised in the publications which are to be ordered through you, the Co-Publishers, and receive 20 to 100 or so publications for your own mailings. You simply stamp your name and address as Co-Publisher and them out! If the ads don’t pull, you may still come out ahead from orders which come to you as the Co-Publisher. When you receive orders, retain 50% (or whatever amount is the agreed commission) and forward the balance with the order, to the Prime Publisher… He will take it from there… It’s that simple. Your own ads, of course, get full circulation based on the total published and distributed.

33. How you can control the number of orders you get as a Co-Publisher?

The number of orders you receive will depend on who you them to. If you to other Co-publishers, orders obtained will usually be for small one inch ads. They will reserve expenditures for large ads, until they become Co-Publishers of the publication themselves, thus getting their advertising at one-half rates! If your mailings are directed to mailorder beginners, opportunity seekers, or direct to the consumer, orders you receive will probably be for books or products offered under “Order From Co-Publisher” ads.

34. What must you do to get started economically and efficiently as a “top” commission mailer?

Order a good rubber stamp… Send for some free commission circulars, pay only the postage for these. They are available from prime source mailorder firms… Send for some free names who want Big … Buy a supply of envelopes and stamps… Address the envelopes to the names wanting big … When you receive your circulars. stamp your name and address in the blank space provided, put one of each type of circular in each envelope, filling to the maximum weight for each level of postage rate; them. When you receive orders, take out your commission and forward everything else to the Prime source… And you are in business!

35. How do you make $50,000 a year by working from your kitchen table 4 hours a week?

There is money in the mailorder business but not as some advertise it. Don’t believe it. You won’t make $50,000 a year by working 4 hours a week. NO! It doesn’t work that way! If you will follow instructions, be happy with from $100 to $400 a week spending a few hours every night, five nights a week, then you too can make money in order.

36. What is one of the biggest mistakes you can make as a commission mailer?

It is good policy to never get your circulars, and your mailing list, from the same dealer.

37. How do you get started with your own adsheet?

Adsheets are sometimes started by the publisher cutting others ads from various adsheets or magazines and pasting these on their own adsheet without cost to the advertiser. This adsheet is then mailed to these various dealers with an offer to re-run the ads at the published rate. This is not the best method. It is better to find publishers who will send you partial page, or full page ads that pay from 50% to 100% commission. You run these ads over your name in the first few editions of your adsheet. As paid ads come in you simply replace these free commission ads with the paid ads. Until you get paid ads for your publication, you have a chance to make money whether you have paid advertisers or not. Moreover, some companies will give you substantial discounts on their various mailorder programs if you will run their ad in the first edition. Thus you can make money off of their ads and also get professionally designed mailorder programs at very little cost.

38. How do you keep your Co-publishing costs to Zero?

The discounts for your own ads are generally 50% with most of the mailorder publications. In return for the discount you are expected to a few copies. “Piggy-back” the copies in orders you fill and in your big mails, or advertise offering them free for payment of postage. Using these methods your postage cost to your copies can be Zero!

39. What colors are the most appealing to women, in order of preference?

Red, Violet, Blue, Green, Orange, White, Yellow.

40. What colors are the most appealing to men in order of preference?

Blue, Red. Violet, Green, Orange, White, Yellow.

Should Professional Athletes Be Role Models?

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

There are many that think and argue that professional athletes should be better role models and that when they engage in unsportsmanlike behavior and criminal activity it just plainly Antiques a bad example to todays youth.

Many will also argue that athletes are hired by their employer and are paid to do their job and are not paid to be role models. This makes sense and it is true that they are not paid to be a role but whether they like it or not athletes are role models.

Now, does that mean they will be a good role ? Of course not, there are also bad role models! But yes, they are role models, it is just one of those things that come with their job.

Most athletes do try to conduct themselves in a positive manner when in public view but there are those who just don’t care what anyone thinks of them. The minds of those that say “athletics are not role models” are doing some wishful thinking; really they should not be role models but they are and that’s a fact that no one can change.

The fact that so many kids look up to all these baseball players, basketball players and football players simply makes them role models. Here is an example, when you become a parent you automatically become a role whether you like it or not. You can not simply say I am a parent and not a role . The old saying “Do as I say, not as I do” does not work. Because you are a role in that childs eyes! Kids look up to parents. Not only parents but also to big brothers and other family members, teachers, doctors, police man and the list goes on.

These professional people are all role models for todays youth whether they like it or not. Even the drug dealer can be a role , he of course will be a bad role but when the kids around the neighborhood are looking up to him and wanting to be like him he has become a role in their mind.

So to ask the question “Should professional athletics be role models?” is not a valid question because they have no choice in the matter - THEY ARE ROLE MODELS!
