Are Talented Players Necessarily Good Investments?

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

Over the past few decades, we have seen an astronomical rise in professional athletes’ salaries. For example, during the 1960’s the minimum wage for a baseball player was $6,000, while the league average was somewhere in the ballpark of $19,000. Now, however, players with the most meager of salaries make about as much as the President of the United States. As a result of the jump, the league average is now roughly $1.5 million.

Now, I’m not here to question whether or not players actually deserve the salaries they receive. After all, this is America. We are capitalists. Enough said. However, when it comes to spending so much money on one player, it is vastly important to choose the right kind of player. Otherwise, a team may as well flush the money right down the toilet.

So, what kind of player is a good investment? Well, obviously the player needs talent. If a professional organization is going to shell out upwards of a million dollars, the player better be capable of performing. But, is that it? Can a player be immensely talented and be a good investment? Maybe. Take a look at the following players and tell me what the link is between them.

Rafael Palmeiro, Darryl Strawberry, Steven Jackson, Michael Vick, Pacman Jones, Tank Johnson and half of the Cincinnati Bengals’ team.

The common characteristic is that each of these players is very, very good at playing his respective sport. However, there is another common characteristic; and that is each of these players has had off-the-field problems of one type or another. Rafael Palmeiro had a steroids scandal. Darryl Strawberry struggled with a drug addiction. Steven Jackson, Pacman Jones, Tank Johnson and the Bengals have all run into trouble with the law. As a result of these improprieties, every single one of these players has all been out of commission for a lengthy period at one time or another. Essentially, when they have off-the-field problems, they are being paid for nothing. Furthermore, these types of players drag their team’s name through the mud and give them a questionable reputation. Any good investor will tell you that if you don’t earn a return on your investment, you made a bad decision and should change your tactics.

So, what change in tactics should recruiters implement? Well, in my opinion, recruiters need to look for talent as well as character. Take Derek Benzodiazepines for example. He is a stand-out player and a stand-up person off the field. Even though Jeter earns a lot of money, he is worth the investment. If recruiters would focus on both talent and character, they would have better results.

ITV Ventures Review - Honest Money Making Opportunity Or Scam?

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

Do you realize that there are many more infomercials today as compared to 10 years ago? When you look at the television the commercials are aired in such a way to engage the viewer in their ‘wants’. My goal is to help you get the logical side before investing your hard earned cash into ITV Ventures.

We will go through the very basics of the ITV Ventures opportunity right down to the good and the bad. This way you know that you will be getting a full unbiased review right at your fingertips. Let’s get started.

The Core

The founder and president of ITV Ventures is a charismatic man by the name of Donald Barrett.

ITV Venture is the sister company of ITV a six year old debt free multimedia infomercial producer. Thereby making ITV Ventures is in fact a home based division for ITV. Just so you know, it is not only a multimedia company alone.

They engage recognized celebrities to promote branded health and nutrition products mainly through the media. Your common health and wellness products range around 200 lines and so you are looking at a health related business opportunity with itv ventures.

The Good

Since we’re here, you would already be someone who probably have some interest in the health and nutrition products industry, right? If not, then you would be someone who watched ITV Ventures infomercials.

What ITV Ventures have done successfully as I have observed is they maintain the network marketing concept but they combine online auto insurance quote the Internet and television based mediums. This kind of communication would be very powerful to reach out to millions.

You are at a better advantage if your target market are people who mainly watch television. You can get started from $165 to $499 in the ITV Ventures opportunity. Then, you also get your own website. Comes with a nice business presentation.

The Bad

You join ITV Ventures just like a network marketing business. The one thing that is weird is that your ‘residual income’ comes from:

1) Someone joins your team and works on their own ITV Ventures business.

2) It’s still quite traditional where they rely on viewers calling the number showed during the infomercial

A credibility issue is that typical network marketing even in ITV Ventures shouts the bold statement of “leaders from other traditional network marketing companies are joining us”. I don’t think anyone should make claims like that if their program is good enough.

What Donald Barrett of ITV Ventures say this “If you can’t make it in this business, you can’t make it in any business”. I’m sure anyone with the right mindset can work in any business.

In closing, if you are a health and wellness fanatic with a desire to make big profits from 2%-8% of every dollar you sell then by all means make ITV Ventures your choice. However, if you want a better option then it is best to search for greener pastures at your own time.

Online Stock Photography - A World Where Pigs Fly

Sunday, December 28th, 2008

I remember back Ritalin the early 90s when my brother John called me up on the phone one day and explained that he had found a niche in digitally manipulated photography. He said he was poised to make a good deal of money with it, but he couldn’t find any good help. He knew that I had been into computers and thought maybe he could get me to work for him helping him digitally manipulate his photography.

John was a professional photographer doing mainly stock photography, and had discovered some new software called Adobe Photoshop. John found that he could use Photoshop to fix problems with photos taken at an expensive photo shoot that would have had to been re-shot. He also found that he could use the software to create photographs that just could not be shot in real life. This was a great thing for his stock photography business.

At the time I had just had a business fail, and I was supporting my family as an injection molding press operator, earning near minimum wage working the graveyard shift. John lived in San Francisco at the time and his studio was located where AT&T stadium is now. I was living in Stockton California, a good hour and a half commute each way.

Well John offered me $50.00 an hour to come work for him in his studio in S.F., and I asked him what time he wanted me to report for work in the morning!

For the next 5 years I worked for my brother doing digital manipulation for stock photography, digital retouching, and lots of digital art and photography for advertising agencies. I remember one of my first projects was to put an egret’s wings onto a pig for a stock photo of flying pigs.

Another time I brought my pet three-foot-long iguana to the studio and we photographed him. In those days we used film, and after developing the film we would use a drum scanner to digitize the photo, and then use either Photoshop or Live Picture to manipulate the photos. We turned the iguana into a fire-breathing dragon.

One job we did for Mother Jones magazine involved replacing Madame Chiang Kai-shek’s head with Hillary Clinton’s head in a photo of Madame Chiang Kai-shek chatting with Eleanor Roosevelt in the rose garden at the White House. We were later told that Hillary had it framed and put on her desk. We also heard that she was at first confused because she did not recognize the outfit she was wearing in the photo. Go figure.

We specialized in “conceptual” stock photography, producing images such as money trees, time flies - (a watch with wings), an image of the earth in space but made of currency, dollar bills flying out the window, and that kind of thing. We also did photo-shoots for fortune 500 companies and used digital techniques to produce advertising images. John acquired an incredible reputation for producing the best stock photography of its kind, and all of the ad agencies knew him well. He was a huge success. He created a line of images he called “Animal Antics” using images of animals doing odd things like skateboarding and riding bikes. The images were the basis for a highly successful line of greeting cards.

I finally grew tired of the commute and of sitting in front of a computer all day with an art-director telling me what to do. I went back to being an inventor, and John capitalized very well on his pioneering venture into digital stock photography, digital manipulation and funny pictures of animals.

Back then John was the first and for some-time the only stock photographer using digital manipulation to produce stock photos. There was no internet, and stock photography was pretty much limited to ad agencies with big budgets.

In those days he sold stock photography through Tony Stone Images, and The Stock Market. Now Tony Stone is gone as is The Stock Market and Getty Images and number of other large stock agencies have replaced them. Royalty free photography, widespread use of digital manipulation, and the internet are changing the face of the industry. Times have changed and John recently told me that the future of stock photography was online.

Mom and Pop business’s are going on the internet to find stock photos for their newsletters, advertising both online and hard copy, brochures, trade show booths, etc. He feels the future of stock photography is online catering to the masses with low cost stock photography. There is a huge market for all types of photos for everything from photos for websites to pictures for brochures, to pictures for printed merchandise like cups and baseball caps. Most people now searching for stock photos don’t even know what a stock photo is. They search for “pictures of pigs” or “shark pictures”.

To take advantage of this burgeoning new market for stock photos, today’s upcoming photographers (and the old ones too) need to get their work online where it can be found and purchased.

Once again John is on the leading edge of his field. John has now launched a new website to address the blossoming online small business stock photo market. Somewhere on his website there are photos of fire-breathing dragons in a world where pigs do indeed fly.

Visit John’s new website for funny pictures and great stock photos www.johnlund.com/Stock Photography Online Fine art prints and printed merchandise also available at his site.

Real Estate Prices May Get Boost from Government Intervention

Saturday, December 27th, 2008

Before this week’s latest interest rate cut and rumors of a further government mortgage bailout, housing and real estate prices had been projected to continue falling for the next year or more. It will probably be a few more weeks before mortgage interest rates are affected (if they are affected at all), but one widely expected consequence of cheaper fed rates is that mortgages and other loans will become more affordable. If mortgage rates do decline, speculative buyers will see a clear opportunity to purchase real estate at deep discounts from last year’s high prices. Homeowners with variable rate mortgages such as ARMS may also use this opportunity to refinance into low fixed-rate mortgages.

As if to further encourage speculation, President Bush and members of Congress have spoken out repeatedly in support of government subsidies to bailout distressed mortgage brokers and home-owners. If such legislation passes with significant financial backing, investors will be encouraged by the implied security of future real estate purchases and the bill will keep the loan companies profitable and selling new loans. With risk removed by a government bailout, investors and landlords will be again encouraged to buy houses quickly donate car to charity they are still under the bubble-market highs. If such demand spikes occur due to federal backing of the market, prices could rise fairly quickly between three months and nine months from now.

The primary risk involved with the interest rate cut is that investor demand for the U.S. Dollar will decrease and its value will continue to fall, perhaps at an accelerated rate. Stocks, commodities, and precious metals will continue to rise, as will the cost of living. The hopes of the Fed and Congress is that real estate prices and job creation will also rise. However, if house sales remain slow and if inflation causes business costs to rise faster than job creation, there is a serious risk of recession before the 2009 presidential inauguration.

In all, low interest rates may help home prices but it may not help consumers struggling to cope with higher general prices and expensive mortgages. Gas prices will most likely continue climbing as the dollar tests new lows against the Euro, and bio-fuel production is having a major effect on agricultural prices.

Why Work With a Credentialed Hiring Consultant?

Sunday, December 21st, 2008

There are an endless array of reasons to choose a certified staffing firm over the average headhunter. To begin with, certification takes hard work and it takes dedication. Two ingredients sql server restore we should all seek from all of our business partners. It also shows that the hiring specialist in question has a deep devotion to their career as a staffing agent (no part-time “headhunters” here). These professionals have taken the time to be educated on numerous levels and to learn about all sides of the hiring equation - and we know that this includes far more than the obvious two: corporation and candidate.

Being a great staffing agent means considering much more than finding the round peg for the round hole. It means interviewing potential candidates with a different kind of ear - this neatly brings in the CEIC Certification (Certified Employment Interview Consultant), as well as the CPBA Training (Certified Professional Behavioral Analyst). The latter of these is vital, since a candidate’s resume and background might be a perfect fit, but their personality and their behavioral assets could find them a poor combination for certain teams or companies. Choosing to work with a staffing agent who is able to screen your candidates and potential hires time after time, with both an interviewer’s ear and a sixth sense, becomes a system you can trust and rely on.

This CPBA certification also becomes a great asset to the candidate as well. We are all a collection of assets and strengths, and having a trained objective eye to help us feature some aspects and downplay others, doesn’t just “land the job,” it mentors us in a way we can use in our real, day-to-day lives far into our future. For instance, by taking a brief behavioral assessment, such as the DiSC profile, the hiring mentor can then help an applicant to understand that they might be more suited to a service-oriented career (such as executive assistant) - or a more dynamic role as a salesperson, depending on their reactions to things (as demonstrated through the DiSC scores). Secret strengths are often brought to the surface through these exercises, and this can make a real difference in the direction a person’s career might go and even allow them to course correct if they’re far off base or unhappy.

It also helps if your hiring consultant is a Certified Professional Career Coach (CPCC). This means, that they have invested themselves in the education and hard work needed to mentor others on how to discover their right path, right now. And what can happen when you work with the right career coach is huge. You can literally learn to transform and create success all around you - in your job, your family, your relationships, everything. Let’s face it, we’re at work A LOT, and finding your real niche is very important. Likewise, getting caught in the wrong one is awful.

On the corporate client side, you will find that your staffing efforts go much more smoothly if the person you partner with at a staffing firm is a CPC (Certified Personnel Consultant) and/or a CTS (Certified Temporary Staffing Specialist). These certifications involve many tough hours of training in ethics, customer care and communication - something vital to this process and partnership. And being a Certified Search Specialist (CSS) doesn’t hurt either. So where on earth is one to find this alphabet soup of specialties?

The answer to that question varies, but taking the time to make sure that the staffing firm you choose HAS these expert credentials will not only make your hiring efforts easier, you will also have a teammate who brings more than an endless stream of applicants to the table — a credentialed team brings dedication, expertise, an understanding of hiring laws in your particular state AND the right candidate for the right job, right now!

Basketball Fast Break Conditioning Drills

Saturday, December 20th, 2008

Many talented basketball teams get beat because they aren’t in as good of shape as the other team. At the end of insurance estimates game, the player that is intense and has great stamina will always out-perform the naturally gifted athlete that hasn’t taken conditioning very serious.

The following basketball drills are perfect for getting players in shape. They promote intensity, concentration and are flat out tiring. They also provide players with the opportunity to practice the fast break.

4-4 Defensive Drill

This could have been my least favorite drill to participate in as a player because you get so tired. It is a drill where I encourage players to be physical and to play hard at all times. It is easy to run and can be done on teams of 6 or 8 if you just shorten the amount of players that the cheapest car insurance against each other. Start with 4 players on defense and 4 players on offense. The offense starts at the end line and the defense starts at the foul line facing them. In order to make sure that this is a drill focused on defense, I would only reward stops and not points. At the start of the drill the coach calls out two names of the players on defense who must touch the end line before running to play defense. This gives the offense the advantage early on. The coach will throw the ball to the offense and they will run down and attempts to score while the other two defenders try to slow down the ball or stop it altogether before the others get there. This drill has been performed at every level and I’ve seen players run this drill very physically. Remember to force the ball to a sideline and away from the middle of the court. Remember to try to force the ball to be backed up or reversed. In this drill, just a small second can allow everyone to catch up and have it be equal. The first team with 3 stops wins the drill. A stop is a steal or a rebound. The losing team either runs or stays in the drill longer. It is a punishing drill and I’ve seen players get sick to the point of throwing up because they couldn’t stop the other team from scoring.

2 Man Speed Drill

I hated this drill when I was younger because it is such a killer conditioning wise. This drill involves 2 players. Player 1 takes the ball out of bounds and throws to player 2 who immediately takes the ball and speed dribbles to the opposing foul line. Player 1 meanwhile runs to the mid-court sideline and then cuts at an angle to the basket at full speed. Player 2 throws a pass to player 1 who lays the ball in the basket. Player 2 gets the ball, before it hits the ground, and takes it out of bounds. The drill then starts over with the positions in reverse. Each tandem should go down and back before another group goes. This drill will get you tired. For coaches, make sure that the players that are filling the lane are running full speed to get there. Don’t allow them to loaf down the floor and don’t allow the point guard to dribble slowly. Basketball drills need to be done at full speed in order to be truly effective.
